2026 OCTOBER · AUCKLAND

Dad, how long has it been
since you had a heart-to-heart conversation
with your family?

You may have worked tirelessly to provide for and protect your family in New Zealand, while finding less and less time to share what is truly in your heart. The Auckland Father School 15th Cohort is not a programme that pressures you to become a perfect father. It is a place to pause, listen and learn how to reconnect.

WHY NOW

You worked for your family—so why do you feel farther away from them?

Immigrant life often increases responsibility while leaving less space for meaningful conversation. Father School helps you recognise that gap and take practical steps to reconnect.

Working hard and staying emotionally connected are not the same thing

Many fathers work longer, endure more and try to become stronger because they love their families. Yet what a family sometimes needs is not another achievement, but a father who listens and a husband who reaches out first after a mistake.

Building a livelihood and raising children in an unfamiliar country is not easy. Language, culture, financial pressure and generational differences can leave a father feeling as though he carries the whole burden alone—even at home. Words become shorter, expressions become harder, and the family may notice his exhaustion before they recognise his love.

Auckland Father School is not designed to add guilt. It offers fathers who have already worked hard for their families practical tools for better conversation and companions who will walk beside them.

In family relationships, the disappearance of conversation can be more dangerous than conflict itself. Conflict may still show that people care and expect something from one another. But when silence lasts too long, each person begins to guess what the other is thinking. A father may feel misunderstood, while his family may interpret his silence as indifference. This programme does not promise to remove every misunderstanding overnight. Instead, it helps participants practise the simple disciplines of asking, listening and checking before assumptions grow.

The programme does not ask fathers to give up their authority. It helps them understand authority not as the power to issue commands, but as the responsibility to protect relationships. Apologising first is not weakness, and listening to a child to the end is not a loss of leadership. Creating a home where family members feel safe to speak is one of the strongest and most lasting forms of a father’s influence.

A strong father is not someone who solves every problem alone, but someone who can open his heart honestly before his family.
  • Restoring Conversation: Practise listening and asking questions before giving advice.
  • Expressing Emotion: Put the fear, responsibility and love behind anger or silence into words your family can understand.
  • Small Steps at Home: Turn what you learn into clear actions you can begin practising at home immediately.

A PARADOX

Becoming a Better Father Is Not About Becoming Harder, but Learning to Become Gentler First

Family relationships tend to close under pressure and open when people feel safe and heard. This is the transformative paradox at the heart of Father School.

The Father Who Carries Everything Alone

I believe I must have every answer in order to protect my family.

When conversation begins, I first point out problems and mistakes.

I believe hiding my struggles is a sign of responsibility.

I love my family, but I lack the words that help them feel that love.

VS
The Father Who Builds Connection

I choose to listen to my family’s full story rather than trying to have every answer.

Before deciding who is right or wrong, I first consider whether the relationship feels safe.

I accept that admitting weakness and asking for help can also be acts of responsibility.

I express gratitude, apology and blessing in words my family can clearly hear.

FAQ

Common Questions Before You Register

Clear answers to the questions first-time participants most often ask.

Who can participate?

The programme welcomes men who want to grow as fathers, restore communication with their families and share the responsibilities and loneliness that can accompany immigrant life. Your willingness to participate matters more than your church position or previous training.

Do I need to attend all four sessions?

Because the four evenings form one connected journey, full attendance is recommended. If you expect a scheduling conflict, explain your situation in the enquiry form.

Does my family attend with me?

The primary participants are fathers. However, family encouragement and understanding are valuable because participants will apply what they learn through conversations and practical steps at home.

What should I do if the confirmation email does not arrive?

First check your spam, junk and promotions folders, and confirm that your email address was entered correctly. If you still cannot find the message, describe the issue in the quick enquiry form so the team can assist you.

Can I remain involved after completing the programme?

Graduates may be invited to support future cohorts through leadership, worship or programme operations. Specific opportunities will be explained during the programme.

When will venue access and preparation details be confirmed?

The current venue is 5 Gladstone, Northcote. Final entry instructions, parking information and anything you need to bring will be provided after your registration is confirmed.

Is it okay if I am quiet or uncomfortable speaking in front of others?

Yes. You will not be expected to share extensively from the beginning. You may listen and participate at your own pace. Honest, small steps matter more than polished words.

Should I expect immediate, visible results?

Four meetings cannot automatically solve every family problem. They can, however, help you recognise habits that block communication and begin practising apology, gratitude and attentive listening. As small actions are repeated, your family can begin to trust the change they see.
